A negative keyword is a type of keyword that can prevent your ad showing to specific keyword that you dont want to trigger you ad

Negative keywords can help you to show the relevant search queries but not for the keywords which are Un-relevant

It also helps you to reach the most interested customer which can lead to reduced cost and an increased return on investment

When choosing a negative keyword to try to choose the word which is similar to your keyword but unrelated to product or services that you provide

For instance, let us assume you supply “beauty products” through an e-commerce website. Then you don’t want to trigger your ads for the search terms like “beauty parlor” “beautiful dresses” “beauty salon”

So if you add these keywords as your negetive keywords then your ads dont show up for that keywords

If you are using a display campaign or video campaign this negative keyword can help you avoid targeting un-relevant sites and videos

But negative works differently for display network and video network when compared to search

Negative keywords can also be match types you can use them with appropriate symbols except broad modifier. You have to use the exact match for display and video campaign. There are three types of negative keyword match types

  • Negative phrase match: Would not show anytime the term showed anywhere in the query in that order.
  • Negative exact match: Would only not show when the exact term is the entire query.
  • Negative broad match: Would not show anytime the entire term showed anywhere in the search query

For search campaign you can use broad match,phrase match, exact match

For display campaign you have to use the exact match selecting the topic that a page consists.
 Ads won’t show on a page even if the exact keywords or phrase are not on the page explicitly, but the topic of the content is strongly related to the excluded set of negative keywords.

For example, we have a negative keyword list containing [women’s wear] your ad won’t display in pages that contain the keyword

Negative broad match : In this type of match type your ad doesnt show your ad for the keywords which include the words of your negative keyword irrespective of order

Negative exact match: In this type of match type the ad won’t show for the search term with the same order. It can include additional words. but the order must be same
